[Sheflug] Re: help - stuck on runlevel

try run level 1

no gui and only as root = superuser = admin = administrator

then type

/sbin/chkconfig --level 012345 kudzu off

Unplug the mouse, you would not need it, do you remember root password!!

who is root?

on linux you have root as file system

  /

you have root as a person = root = 0
                                  /|\
                                  / \

and root has a folder, directory called. "root"

 /
 |
 /home
 |
 /root

once logged in as root you can switch run level with telinit 5

start X

root [at] lxbox root]# startx

Hi Fred & Seb,

Thanks for your response.

Whatever number I try when it gets to enter runlevel causes the keyboard and
mouse to stop responding.

However, I have been doing some reading online and stuck in no. 1
installation disk and at boot: typed in linux rescue.

After a bit of fiddling, I got to the point where I could type in
/sbin/chkconfig --level 012345 kudzu off

I got back
failed to glob pattern /etc/rc0.d/[sk][0-9][0-9]kudzu: No such file or
directory failed to make symlink /etc/rc0.d/k95kudzu: No such file or
directory

I tried it a few times and got the same thing.

So I tried /sbin/chkconfig --level 5 kudzu off
it returned me to the prompt, I tried the above with 4,3,2,1 and it returned
me to the prompt with no comment.

However when I entered /sbin/chkconfig --level 0 kudzu off

It gave me
failed to glob pattern /etc/rc0.d/[sk][0-9][0-9]kudzu: No such file or
directory failed to make symlink /etc/rc0.d/k95kudzu: No such file or
directory

I unplugged the mouse exited and the machine rebooted and came to enter
runlevel again.

Whilst I was sitting there staring at it in disbelief I noticed above
INIT: version 2.84 booting
INIT: /etc/inittab (1): field too long (max 4 characters)
INIT: /etc/inittab (2): field too long (max 4 characters)
INIT: /etc/inittab (3): field too long (max 4 characters)
INIT: /etc/inittab (4): action field too long
INIT: /etc/inittab (5): field too long (max 4 characters)
INIT: /etc/inittab (6): field too long (max 4 characters)
INIT: /etc/inittab (7): rlevel field too long (max 11 characters)
INIT: /etc/inittab (8): rlevel field too long (max 11 characters)
INIT: /etc/inittab (9): action field too long
INIT: /etc/inittab (10): field too long (max 4 characters)
INIT: /etc/inittab (11): field too long (max 4 characters)

Enter runlevel: 1
INIT: Entering runlevel:1
INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel

there was some more that I could see that said error a lot. When I have
time, probably Sunday now I will write down those messages as well, in fact
the whole screen.

Regards

Janet
