When I plug in my digital camera, the usb-storage driver assigns it a pseudo-scsi id so it can be accessed as a normal HDD, for which I have created a mountpoint in fstab. If you do a "tail -f /var/log/messages" in a terminal while you plug the memory stick in & out you should see what is happening and what modules are invoked.
