[Sheflug] Antivirus measures

I'm thinking of putting an AV plugin on my firewall (IPcop). I'm also
thinking of setting up a local email server so that we can automatically
remove spam messages from works mail. I'm presuming I can add AV scanning
to this PC as well.

What I'm not sure on is how the firewall scanner will work. I'm presuming
any files downloaded via ftp or http will be scanned but what about mail
attachments or does this depend on the software.

Why am I asking? Well our firewall is a Cyrix 6x86 133Mhz machine with
about 64MB RAM and I don't want to slow down internet access too much by
adding AV at this point (currently running IP cop and Dans Guardian) if the
same benefits can be had by adding it at the mail server. We currently run
about 8 windows clients on the network, most of which are light internet
use. Our mail will be hosted on another server (Suse 9 PIII as below) but
antivirus protection at that point won't get stuff that's downloaded direct
will it?

Any suggestions appreciated. (including what antivirus scanner to use (I'm
thinking of using Exim mail server, spamassasin and Clam but alternatives
(for ease of installation) would be appreciated.) All I need is outgoing
mail (currently sendmail) and incoming mail for one domain from one server
online to be passed out to about 8 windows clients. Currently incoming is
pulled by win clients direct from ISP pop server.
