[Sheflug] Distros
Hi Folks,
I need some help deciding if I should change distro...
I've just bought myself a lovely 2nd hand Dell Precision 410 Dual
Pentium III 700 MHz to replace my very outdated IBM 300 GL Pentium 200.
I use Linux purely as a server environment at home to host a few
websites, collect email and provide IMAP, ssh and other stuff externally.
The Pentium 200 MMX runs fine in text mode and I have never really had
any problems but it's time to move on.
I have been using Redhat since version 6.5 and have upgraded all the way
up to Fedora 2 since it came out a few weeks ago.
My question is, what distro should I install on the new box? I've been
wanting to try something different for a while.
I'm very familiar with RPM but I'm also comfortable compiling and
installing stuff manually.
Gentoo looks good, but how does Portage measure up?
emerge doesn't seem to check dependencies when removing packages...
I'll probably stick with text mode for now and install X and maybe Gnome
later.
Thanks for your help in advance.
Yours,
Andy Bloomfield
P.S. I'm using a Knoppix Live CD on the new box at the moment and it rocks!
