The new installations are quite easy.

You will find that you need to use Hyperterminal on a MS box to do the initial setu. Most of the transfers use the XModem protocol and it is easy to do in Hyperterminal. You also need ActiveSync running on an MS box to initially copy the boot-blaster and boot-loader to the iPAQ .

Grab the latest bootblaster and bootloader from:

http://handhelds.org/download/bootldr/install.html

If you follow the instructions "exactly" you will not end up with a brick :-) Once the bootloader is on the iPAQ that is the dangerous part over. You can then try out the different distro's like OPIE and GPE.

If you go to this page you can download a complete image to copy yo your iPAQ by selecting the model of iPAQ and the distro that you want:
http://familiar.handhelds.org/familiar/releases/v0.7.2/install/download.html

Install instructions are here:
http://familiar.handhelds.org/familiar/releases/v0.7.2/install/install-serial.html

I prefer OPIE - it works well and the packages get updated on a regular basis.

Good luck.

Anybody got any experience of converting an Ipaq to Linux?? I am just
printing off the FAQ, which looks a bit daunting. Is this the sort of thing
we could do at the August meeting if I brought it with me?

Mines a 3870. Got some help from James Mears for this. We were running a handhelds site and mailing list of our own but no one showed interest other than myself and James and Craig Andrews. So, we dropped it. Could put it up again but two people showing interest doesn't mean a list can be run.

(It doesn't matter if we turn it into a brick as its battery life is poor.)

The new installation method is supposed to be improved over the one that I am using.
