Most GNU/Linux distributions do have a built in firewall. In Suse its set
up in Yast, the setup utility that is Suse's equivalent of control panel.
Not sure what the equivalent is in Redhat but it is there under
configuration or something similar.
To protect your kids from viewing nasties on the windows box you could try
www.we-blocker.com which is free and works on a centrally updated list of
blocked sites as well as weighted keyword scanning for each page. On the
linux box there is Dans Guardian to do the same.
