How should go about installing it over my current linux distro mandrake i want to keep my /home partition intact will i be able to tell fdisk to call ithome but not erase it?

It amazes me that there is still no link to Gentoo on the ShefLUG web page when I asked about this a year or so ago and quite a few people seem to use it. Just checked and it still isn't there...

Anyway, back to your question. You partition the disk yourself with fdisk or cfdisk (I prefer cfdisk), and so you can choose to keep /home. You can keep your existing directory structure totally if you want - just mke2fs -j /dev/hdax etc would make a new ext3 file system.

You also write /etc/fstab yourself, and so again you can mount /home where you like etc. This is one of the great things about Gentoo - you learn so much about how Linux works. As a result I have been so much more confident about going in and fixing broken things in other distros too.

I now use Gentoo at home, work and no my web server with no problems... I hope it works out for you too.
