Funnily enough, I've just done more or less the same to get my Xbox
connected to Xbox Live! I spend several hours last night playing Burnout
3 Takedown (gamer tag 'dans crew')! The only bit I haven't cracked yet
is outgoing voice via the Communicator.
The XB is connected to a SuSE laptop with a crossover cable and then on
to my home LAN via WiFi.
I had to enable IP forwarding in the kernel (a YAST tick box) and set up
the routing.
On the laptop, I made sure it could see both networks (by pinging my
firewall and the XB), then set up a route on the laptop: route add
192.168.198.0 gw 192.168.198.1. This may not have been strictly
necessary. I'll try again tonight :-)
Definietly though, a route on the firewall:
route add -net 192.168.198.0 gw 192.168.199.48 netmask 255.255.255.0
+--------------------+
| XBOX 192.168.198.2 |
+--------------------+
|
+----------------------------+
|laptop wlan0 192.168.199.48 |
| eth0 192.168.198.1 |
+----------------------------+
|
+------------------------+
| IPCop f/w 192.168.199.1|
+------------------------+
By the sounds of it, you may not have a route on the firewall. I assume
that you've got the PC on the other side of the laptop on a different
network? My problem was DNS resolution on the XBOX until I twigged the
lack of a route on the f/w.
For a more permanent solution, I may look at some kind of media centre
system downstairs next to the telly to do the routing that will stream
audio out to the surround sound amp. Until then (when I can convince
SWMBO), the laptop will suffice!
