[Sheflug] recommendations for reporting tool to report from MySQL

I've got a database in MySQl that's being used to run an IRM
(stackworks.net) based ticket tracker/helpdesk.  The included reports are
basic and the method of designing new ones is a bit obtuse (to those not
familiar with php sql based reporting).  Is there a better and easier way of
running off reports from the mysql database?
