Second thought - you can't use Perl at all. By the time you want to run the 
script (system shutdown), and depending on how you've got your system set 
up, /usr may be unavailable (unmounted). If you've got everything on one 
filesystem (the root), fine, but if Perl doesn't sit on the root FS, then 
Perl's a non-starter.
