whilst probably not as simple as adding a some beeps, you could put a
terminal on the serial port.
This would have the added advantage that if the networking ever failed or
the box hung, you wouldn't need to lug a monitor and keyboard over, just
connect with a laptop using minicom or *cough* hyperterminal.

put the following at the end of inittab

# Example how to put a getty on a serial line (for a terminal)
#
T0:23:respawn:/sbin/getty -L ttyS0 9600 vt100
