[Sheflug] Wireless Event
Hi
Someone might be interested in this. It's a Cisco event with some
interest in wireless technology.
"Wireless Networking ? You're Sacked !"
Paul Hill
Pre-sales System Engineer, Cisco UK
18th November, Stoddart Building 7138, 5:30 buffet for 6:30 start.
Abstract
With the proliferation of cheap and readily available IEEE 802.11
wireless networking devices, this is probably the first technology to
be driven by the home user into the business, rather than the other
way around.
With that comes the scary prospect of naďve users plugging in kit with
no security settings at all, not even broken WEP. This opens up a
core network to which so much effort has been expended to protect the
perimeter - crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside. Maybe a
strong HR policy is all that is needed to ensure that all technology
installations must go through the IT department, but with embedded
wireless coming as standard in many devices, this realistically
cannot be relied upon any more.
Most IT people know about the technical issues with WEP and are aware
of the short term fixes to long term replacements, but how can you
deal with such social engineering problems from a technology
perspective?
This discussion will introduce new technology designed to spot rogue
access points on an otherwise trusted network, as well as rogue
ad-hoc wireless networks not connected to the trusted network;
highlight their location, and shut them off the network automatically
before any access breaches can occur.
