[Sheflug] open ldap

I've just had a quick read to find out more about open LDAP and LDAP in
general.  I'm already familiar with Novell's NDS and M$ Active Directory.
Do they all offer the same kinds of services and have the same uses or are
they different in some major way?  If you know where I can find more please
let me know.
