Richard,
	My config is identical except of course /home/peter for myself. My xmms
starts on zero volume. There is a slider control approx. in the centre
of the xmms box. 
	On output plugin page, if I click configure, I have audio device is
default, mixer device is PCM. I had to bring up the master volume
settings box, the PCM slider was set on minimum.
