Funny. I've had problems with a couple of my boxes (my laptop and one of
my desktops). I don't know why it should work, but I found that killing
artsd appeared to kick things into action. I can only guess that it's
some conflict between the various sound packages. Things were quiet on
my laptop (SuSE9.0) on Sunday morning. Blasting artsd out of existence
restored normality (ironically, I wanted to listen to HHGTTG1, so
restoration of normality [Trillian: anything you can't cope with now is
your own problem] was almost poetic).
When I get chance to investigate a bit deeper, I may be able to find the
problem, but until then a quick 'kill' works for me.
