Had this one a few times.  This is something to do with the 2.6 
kernel that came in the box with SuSE 9.1.  The present fourth or 
fifth update is the 2.6.5-7-111 kernel.

This is fine for those of us who can update and fix the kernel 
problem but no good for those of us - like yourself - are stuck with 
a hung installation.  Hopefully someone else can help you to fix your 
Grub problems :)

Debian Sarge doesn't seem to suffer from this bug.
