I've been working with schools in Sheffield for over 3 years now and have
found that they can (on average) be quite reluctant to change or to new
ideas. IMO many teachers are still struggling to know as much about PCs as
the students and introducing a new way of working or even just a new name
for the same way of doing things can be difficult. Some school suppliers
have taken to not listing the operating system on boxes they sell into
schools but sell "black boxes" purely on their functionality (its a
firewall, its an email server, its a print server as opposed to "this Linux
box will do email, file sharing and firewall"). There are two notable
companies in Sheffield providing Linux services to schools. Spyderworks
(.co.uk) has a school server solution for email, firewall, file sharing,
print sharing and a host of other things and Hypercubesystems (.co.uk)
provide, amongst other things, thin client based solutions for schools.
