In short, yes as I understand it. Patent law doesn't care if you saw the
original author/inventors method or not. 

Patents were developed so that methods and knowledge about how things
worked could be publicly disseminated without affecting the inventors
ability to make money from the invention. Once something has been
patented, that's that really. They're really not a good idea for
software, whose code can be hidden and also protected by copyright law.
