No, you definitely don't need to do this.

Did you make sure to open an alsamixer and unmute the master channel?

I can't see anything wrong with what you've described.

Here's my /etc/modules.d/alsa file for comparison (for two sound cards,
rather than one):

# ALSA portion
alias char-major-116 snd
# OSS/Free portion
alias char-major-14 soundcore

## ALSA portion
alias snd-card-1 snd-ens1371
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
# OSS/Free portion
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-slot-1 snd-card-1
##

# OSS/Free portion - card #1
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
## OSS/Free portion - card #2
alias sound-service-1-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-1-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-1-12 snd-pcm-oss

alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss

# Set this to the correct number of cards.
options snd cards_limit=2

Seb,

The mixer made no difference at all, there was just no sound coming through.

I had edited the /etc/modules.d/alsa file exactly as per above, except it was for one sound card, and the limit= was set to one on the last line.

One thing I do remember though, when the system booted, the 'fatal' message about not being able to load described it as snd-intel_8x0 (note the spelling!).

Not sure if that message was direct from the kernel or elsewhere.

I really can't see what I did wrong to be honest; right now it is compiling kde, so once it is finished I am going to go in and change everything back to the way it was, and post the relevant bits of the affected files. Hopefully somebody will spot which error, if any, I made.

Steve.

PS. Apologies for the previous top postings; it was late and I was very tired, although still no excuse.
