David,

There is no sound, although alsamixer works, and the volume
is up. And yes,
there is an internal modem.

As for the hardware, Im fairly sure it is correctly set. It
used to show up
in the kernel options as PCI device, I8x0. Now it shows up as
AC97, but see
snippet below.
Have a look and see if you've got artsd running. I get repeated problems
with my boxes.

If artsd is there, zap it.

Well, progress I think!

PCM Out was set to 'pre 3D'. Changing that to 'post 3D' seems to have done the trick. Im really beginning to hate alsamixer a lot.

Running /etc/init.d/alsasound start and stop at the command line always produced the same error on start ie. FATAL: Unable to load....

So, I've removed alsasound completely from the startup, and added /usr/sbin/alsactl store 0 to the local.stop file and added /usr/sbin/alsactl restore 0 to the local.start file.

Hey presto! I have sound. At least on kde anyway. And no more errors when the system boots.

Im thinking now that the sound driver was being loaded correctly to start with.

Kde is up and running right now, and artsd is running also. But im at a loss as to how i should disable it.

Can anybody give me some clues please....

Steve.
