Re: [Sheflug] Kernel config question

Hi Wonkey
3GHz dual xeon here with Gentoo 2.6.10-r4
The differences between my kernel options and yours are:
- I have Preemptive kernel on
- I have SMT hyperthreading off for some reason. It still shows load across 4
CPUs, though maybe I should turn this option on.
- Check for P4 thermal throttling input on
- Enable kernel IRQ balancing on.
I'm using gcc 3.3.4
CFLAGS="-O3 -march=pentium3 -mcpu=pentium3 -funroll-loops -pipe -mfpmath=sse
-fomit-frame-pointer"
(I vaguely remember using pentium3 because forum posts said they worked better
with p4 xeons, though that was a year ago).
Not using NPTL yet, though will switch to it soon.
Was the machine behaving reliably with windows?

Yes it did behave as well as could be expected under Windows. No error
messages in the logs or anything like that. No hardware problems.
Just searching further in the Gentoo forums after I posted my message, I
found one post that said disable HT as it is only marginally faster
under Linux, and then another that said there is a 30-40 % increase in
performance.
Confused.... Me ? Never........ :-)
Steve.
