[Sheflug] Re: Where does Mozilla store mail?

Ideally you would want to let Mozilla do the importing for you. It's
not necessarily a case of simply copying a file over because different
mail systems from different sources do things differently despite RFC's
to avoid this situation. Some use different delimiters for mail
messages and some (Outlook and Outlook Express) encode the whole mail
box. For the Outlook and Outlook Express mailboxes you'll have to
export from either of these to a text format.

I suggest you work with a copy of the mail folder so that you preserve
your original data until you are happy with the results you achieve.

If you insist on doing things manually, then to be able to answer this
question in full it would also useful to know what GUI/window management
system you are using e.g. KDE, Gnome? And what distro you are using
e.g. Redhat, Knoppix, SuSe.

It's also a bit difficult to really know what you are using when you say
Mozilla because that has changed a bit too. There is still Mozilla but
also Thunderbird (a mail client) and Firefox (a web browser).

At a generic level:

With Redhat or SuSE and Gnome or KDE, you will have some icon on your

desktop which allows you to look at files and directories in your home
directory. Let's call this your file browser.

I haven't used Mozilla as a stand alone application in a long time. I
use Thunderbird for mail and Firefox for web browsing. Thunderbird,
stores mail in a subdirectory of the home .thunderbird directory e.g.
/home/bart/.thunderbird.

Note the . in front of the word thunderbird. You need to set your file
browser so that you can see these directories. Typically they are
hidden . There will be lots you didn't know existed.

Look for a .mozilla one and navigate to the default profile. In sub
directories below that you will find a directory called Mail. Take a
look in that. You should be able to navigate down to where your inbox
and other mail folders are and put the file in there.

You will probably have to stop and restart Mozilla to see the new mail
folder.

Thank you very much Lesley. I'm in a bit of a pickle at the moment. I have
had no trouble importing from Microsoft 2000 to Mozilla 1.7.3. My
difficulty has been then transfering to the linux side of my machine. The
Mozilla in my Redhat 9 doesn't ask me where to import from, if I just leave
it it doesn't import anything.

Anyway I think I am going to have to go back to the beginning. I imported
into Mozilla on my windows side with the intention of not using Internet
Explorer or Microsoft Outlook anymore. I started receiving mail, but when I
came to send emails it wouldn't let me and I don't know why. So at the
moment I am posting from Outlook and receiving in Mozilla. Apart from
tonight where it automatically downloaded into Outlook, so now I am getting
confused with my emails.

So when I have a mouse in Redhat 9 and all my emails are back in the same
place again I shall investigate the above. Thanks again.

Regards

Janet
