[Sheflug] Ubuntu Install: Information only.

Hello

Just thought I'd drop a note about installing Ubuntu - the warty release. I've installed it on my old Celeron box to see what it's like.

Initially I had problems with a GRUB Error 18 on 1st reboot of the system. There is a record for this in Ubuntu's bugzilla (ID 2284).

My disk access to a 15.3GB IBM disk was set to LBA. I changed this to AUTO and did a re-install using one large partition and it failed again on Grub Error 18.

Leaving the disk access at AUTO, I then partitioned my HDD into 3 primaries (/boot, swap and /) and 5 logicals (/home,/usr,/var,/tmp,/usr/local).

Having reduced the partition size, the install process seems to have worked and I can log in under Ubuntu.

Grub Error 18 is not limited to Ubuntu but seems to be a Debian issue :
It appears to affect older machines using larger HDD's.

I've got the default Linux install running and will be taking a good look round it later on. Suffice to say it looks pretty enough :)

I will be looking to change the installation to a server style install to see what that offers.

Regards

LesleyB
