You can boot Windows XP using grub no problems.
The only issue you might have is that in some modern Linuxes the OS has
a different idea of how the hard drive is laid out to Windows, and
fooling with partitions may leave Windows unable to boot (this is
fixable, though).
Look up the grub chainloader option; you should just be able to boot
into your Windows drive without messing around with bootblocks.
