Well, gvim provides a GUI front-end to vi. It's still vi at its heart
(so you still type 'd' to delete things etc), but you can use the mouse to
select text etc, and it has a scollbar and menus. And it does syntax
highlighting. Personally I find it's the best of both worlds: the
convenience of a GUI and the full power of vi. I'm using it to compose
this email.

Of course, there's still a learning curve involved.
