So I install qparted and flash it up. It picked up the disc no problem and
teased me by telling me all the things it could do for me. Who needs
partitionmagic. However, I am using Kubuntu!!! The distribution without a
root account. Qparted will tell me what it can do but won't do it outside of
root. So now I am off to the Ubuntu forums to find out how to use qparted in
Kubuntu... Or to PC World to buy partitionmagic and get the job done.
I used the warty release of Ubuntu and managed to get a root terminal
opened. In there I changed my root password by simply using the plain
old passwd program.
I therefore recovered control of the root account on my Ubuntu
installation. I am quite frankly damned if I am going to leave that
account not under my control.
I can't say where you might find it in Kubuntu or even if it exists
there. Warty came with gnome and it was in one of the menus off the
toolbar.
Warty also ensured a user, effectively with full root powers, was made
during the installation when I installed it.
You might also want to check the powers of the user you are logging in
as and read the man pages on sudo, visudo and sudoers.
I am also curious to know if they still leave port 746 wide open after
installation?
