I have the same router (DG834G, a wireless ADSL all in one thing?)
When you go to the diagnostics page on it, theres a hostname lookup
and also a ping box. You can try that, to make sure it can resolve
hostnames, and then also try pinging various ip numbers, ideally the
one listed as the "gateway" on the first page, and also the DNS
servers.. to make sure you can talk to them.
If the router can see things, then check is to make sure your
/etc/resolv.conf has the right things in it, the DHCP client on your
box usually sorts that out. On your box then you can try ping and name
lookups as well, traceroute is also useful.

Is the adsl "activated?" The router will "sync" to the adsl single,
and display all the green lights and report a speed and everything,
but unless the service is fully activated then you will not get
connected to any ISP services, you hit a wall at the exchange. Under
"router status" you see all the relivent ADSL bits filled in? IP,
gateway, network type etc? And when you hit the connection status
button on the bottom of that page, the box that opens is all correctly
filled in? No authentication failures?
The other option is router firmware.. The version i have, shown on the
status page is 3.01.25. If yours is much lower than that, there it
might be related..

The modem is pretty good, it firewalls all incomming ports unless you
tell it otherwise. I would also make sure remote administration is
turned OFF! Is it a wireless version? if so, you can tell it to only
talk to the MAC addressed you tell it to.
Hope thats some help...
