I am possibly wrong about this but to use chainloader I thought you had to 
install the booting stanza to the  partition you were booting..
..I have just installed Kanotix and I had the choice of MBR or partition...I 
chose partition as I use Fedora grub to boot my playingwith distros ..
I just added the chainloader to fedora and all was ok...
