That sounds like your driver isn't working.

Get something like tcpdump or ethereal installed, and have it sniffing
your ath0 when it's associated (you may have to statically configure
it).

Then, ping it or arping it from another machine, and see if you're
receiving any packets. If you can't, packets aren't making it up the IP
stack. That will either be a driver issue or an encryption thing -
testing without any encryption turned on would be useful (it will
associate without necessarily having the right encryption settings).

The machine locking solid with dhclient going smells like a driver bug
to me.
