Have you tried vmware-server? It's in beta testing, but apparently pretty 
stable. it's free, too, though I don't know whether it always will be.

You run the server on one box and install a virtual machine there, then 
connect to it from any box on the network using vmware-server-console. The 
Gentoo folks are also working to get it into their standard source 
repositories, in case you run Gentoo. I do, and I've had it installed 
happily on this dual-Opteron box running a Win XP VM.
