[sheflug] Copying config files ("/etc/*" and "~/.*") onto a newcomputer.
I've been running Debian testing/unstable for a few years and am about
to get a new computer and install Ubuntu on it.
I've made some explicit customizations by editing files in /etc/ and the
the HOME dotfiles and a lot of implicit ones in HOME by using the GUI
configuration tools for some applications (such as KMail).
I plan to copy the old /etc to another location on the new machine and
start with `diff -r /etc /old/etc` and then examine the results to
decide which files are deliberately customized and which just differ
between the two distributions.
I think the $HOME settings will be more difficult, however, since they
probably include a lot of applications (e.g. KNode) that I used to use,
some of which probably share space ("~/.kde/") with ones I'm still using.
Any relevant suggestions, pitfalls, horror stories?
