Get an external router and connect it to your PC's network card using an
ethernet cable. Configure your networking on Linux to use the router as
the default gateway, set the name servers in /etc/resolv.conf and you
should be in business. Routers are a lot less faffy than modems and have
other benefits (bit more secure, possibility to connect multiple PCs etc).
