To be honest, that just sounds like the PSU blew up.

I've had capacitors in the PSU pop a number of times, and they seem to
be capable of taking out motherboards etc.

I don't know if the price of the PSU is much to do with it, but
reasonable ones seem to be very expensive. I wanted to get one of the
new efficient quiet ones (80%+ or something), and they're virtually
Â100 :(
