Have you tried 'su apt-cache search fonts' ?  You might also try 'su 
apt-get install msttcorefonts'.  You might need to make changes 
to /etc/apt/sources.list to get the second one to work...

You might be better off switching to Ubuntu 7.04 which is said to be 
stable.
