No idea.  Would be BIOS dependent as one has to boot from 
it in times of need.  I'm sure I've heard of people booting
 from a USB stick not sure how it's done though and fairly
 sure it was Linux not Windows.  The whole point being that
 I wouldn't want to lose what I have already installed via 
XP.
  
As you can tell I've never rescued an XP OS either.  I 
think the XP rescue disk creation program expects to use a 
floppy thus making it impossible to use a CD or USB???

The important thing to me is that XP still operates 
afterwards.  

One other thing I noticed is that the article seemed to 
recommend booting into XP a couple of times to get it to 
settle down with the new partition regime while leaving XP 
aware of the 'alien' partition.  When I have dual booted 
in the past I am sure I made XP 'forget' the partition 
existed.  This was to avoid some evilness which meant the 
'alien' partition would be mangled by XP.  Does anyone know
 if this is still necessary?
