I use the line from http://www.tomtaylor.co.uk/blog/2007/04/17/play-it-again/

mplayer -dumpstream -dumpfile Gently1.ra -bandwidth 999999999999 -ao null 
rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/radio4/comedy/wed1830.ra

The bandwidth part means a thirty minute show takes about three minutes to 
download.
