Thanks for the suggestions.

I happened to mention this query to someone who is a none technical computer 
user. They came up with the fairly simple solution of connecting the TV out 
on my video card to a DVD recorder on a household television setup. Then use 
the recordered DVDs on my laptop. Not tried it yet but it might work.
