I've been using Gutsy since it came out and 'telinit 1' has been working
consistently for me..
It stops all the services, takes you to the console where after a few
seconds it prompts for the root password.
If you press <enter> there it takes you back to level 5 or 6.
If you enter the root password you should be in level 1.
Also you can try booting with the 'Recovery Mode' option at GRUB (or append
the 'single' option in the kernel command line of a normal boot option)
All these should take you to the root password prompt..
As a last resort you can stop all services and programs by hand and then
remount your filesystem read-only.
You can do this with: mount -o remount,ro <mount point>
You should be able to fsck after that.

This is my first post around here..
I've been in Sheffield for some time now, but didn't know a LUG existed :)
I might make it to the meeting next week.
