Mmm - may be some parallels in the following...

Before the days of WIMP, computers processed data and helped automate 
tedious tasks to get a job done. Nowadays, the focus seems to be on the 
'richness of the user experience' and I have to make a thousand mouse 
clicks because some stupid designer didn't allow an otherwise simple 
operation to be scripted.

Email lists allow me to filter / organise incoming information in a way 
which suits me and my working methods. Forums on the other hand want me 
to enter the mindset of the forum designer.
