I think the critical question is whether OOXML can be implemented
freely without having to pay patent royalties to Microsoft. If you're
talking about preservation of documents in the long run - being able
to still read something in 50 years time - then this doesn't matter,
but the 20 year period of a patent is effectively eternity from a
software developers point of view.
