What I usually do is open up Gnome or KDE control centre and look for 
the screen and resolution settings.  You have to tell the system what 
your monitor is for it to work at the higher settings.  If either of 
these aren't installed do 'sudo apt-cache search gnome control 
centre' or 'sudo apt-cache search kde control centre' and install 
whatever comes up on the screen.  Or, look for system settings to 
define the monitor.

Other than that you have to use a text editor to manually 
edit /etc/X11/xog.conf.  Some more information is here....
