I expect that this has much to do with pressure being applied by a
certain company behind the scenes. I don't really believe the notion
that customers want "high margin" computers, especially in financially
tough recessionary times. Supermarkets are well known for driving
down costs as much as they can, so removing the operating system and
other bundled software costs would normally make sense within their
business model.
The main reason for the success of Microsoft Windows is simply that it
comes pre-installed on most PCs. In my opinion Microsoft will do
everything possible within their powers to prevent this from changing,
including back room deals with major retailers.
