By a roundabout process I finally got it working by following the 
instructions here:

I came across this page accidentally while looking for something else!
Stupidly, I'd searched the forum using "vpn" rather than "Virtual 
Private Network"!

Anyway, the bit I was missing was
(a) downloading tun.zip from some random Spanish website
(b) that my  IPSec ID was not "linux" as Marc suggested, but the group 
user name for our VPN (Unishef)

However, I've now got to the point where after running vpnc and setting 
it all up, I get a message saying
Welcome to the UNiversity of Sheffield VPN service, blah blah blah. VPNC 
started in background.

There seems to be something more I need to do to get an internet 
connection, but I'm now stumped!
I'm connected to the Unishef network, but I'm not sure I'm fully 
connected to the VPN?

SO nearly there now!
