Ten years ago Microsoft looked unassailable and Office 97 was hard to
beat in terms of functionality. Today they still dominate in the
desktop/laptop world but look decidedly past their prime - like
yesterdays men with an outdated and increasingly irrelevant business
model. Like an aging pop star the only way that Microsoft will
survive is if they can reinvent themselves for the 21st century, and
almost certainly that means embracing ways of doing things which both
Gates and Ballmer have vilified in the past.
