This could be a problem with PulseAudio, which Ubuntu started using with 8.04.
A simple thing you can try running the command "gstreamer-properties" (since
Totem uses Gstreamer to play things) and changing the output sink to ALSA.
Another simple thing you can do is to install the package "totem-xine" (which
will replace totem-gstreamer), since if Gxine works then that version of Totem
should (they both use Xine).
Those are simply bypassing PulseAudio altogether, which is a workaround more
than a fix. A *LOT* of people are having problems with PulseAudio though
(including me), so I'd say that working around it is sensible for now.
PulseAudio does things like streaming your sound over a network, allowing you
to change the volume of each application individually, etc. If you don't need
that then using ALSA directly is sensible.
