# adduser david lp
or
$ sudo adduser david lp

add an existing user to an existing group."

If you open a new xterm, you will have the new group access in it (the id 
command will confirm this).  If you want to run a GUI application with 
the new group's privileges, you either have to run it from a new xterm or 
log out and back in.
