ditto and even the high capacity ones now run pretty much OK on just one USB
power output. Of course any drive can crash, so I have 2 USB drives and copy
data from the in-use one to the other every week or so. You could use backup
software to do this but I prefer to do it by hand to monitor what moves or
changes. If you keep the USB drives separate it also gives some fallback if
your PC gets pinched (as happened to some friends).
The only issue I've had is with partition format. Most USB drives are
formatted for FAT. To avoid file naming problems I always reformat them to
ext3 (using the partition editor in opensuse in my case). Of course USB
drives are rarely as fast as installed drives so there can be a performance
hit, but unless playing games it shouldn't be a problem.
