[Sheflug] My Ubuntu upgrade problems
Was nice to see some of you in the Walkley Cottage today.
Just thought I'd let you know that I *think* I've got to the bottom of
(some of) the problems I had after my upgrade Ubuntu 8.10 => 9.04.
Looks like the TV recording problems and the reported 100% CPU usage
by system monitor were related.
The culprit appears to be 'vino-server' (the remote desktop server).
For anyone who is interested, and in case it helps anyone else who has
a similar problem, the way I found this out was:
1. Typed 'sar 3' (not installed by default) to display my CPU usage
every 3 seconds (to check that 'system monitor' was telling the truth)
2. Typed 'ps -A' to get all the processes that were running
3. Used a mix of 'kill -9 <process id>' or 'killall <process name>' to
kill random processes listed by ps (starting near the bottom of the
list, to try to avoid killing really important processes).
4. When I killed 'vino-server', my CPU idle time suddenly shot from 0% to 98.2%
Hasn't solved my xorg problems with my TV out and Compiz - but I'm now
over 50% of the way back to where I was before I 'upgraded'.
