[Sheflug] Linux font problem?

I'm trying to deal with what I think is a font error on openSuse11.0:

Warning: missing charsets in String to Fontset conversion
Warning: Unable to load any usable fontset

I was having problems with the Citrix Client Reciever 11.0 for Linux, and thought it was specific to that. However, after a few hours googling, it turns out it also affects bundled X apps like xfontsel. The difference is that the Citrix app dies; xfontsel runs.

I've got connections in to the server using FreeNX and the NX client. Connecting from my PC using NX works fine with no error messages. Connecting from one of Seb James's SUMO thin clients and the NX client give me the errors.

Has anyone got any ideas or suggestions for places to look? I've been jacked in to google for the past couple of hours and not got any further forward other than turning a few more hairs grey.
