Thanks for that :)

Tried the above.  Added these two lines and did ./vsftpd restart from 
/etc/init.d and I can still access the whole machine with a single 
user.  I created the user with useradd and then did 'passwd user' to 
create the password.

Anything else I can do ?  I'm less confused than I was :)
